ABOUT GIRLS
MOVING FORWARD
Our
Background
Lacy Asbill and Elana Metz met
in a women’s studies course at Mills College in Oakland,
and instantly became good friends. During their studies in
sociology and gender theory, they realized that so much needed
to be done for women and girls to overcome the obstacles which
hinder their confidence and success.
As students, Elana and Lacy dedicated their time
to running girls’ empowerment groups and mentoring young
women academically. While they saw incredible transformations
in the girls they worked with, Lacy and Elana knew that much
more needed to be done. As these young women never think small,
they decided to found Girls Moving Forward, an organization
dedicated to ending the gender confidence gap and supporting
girls both academically and emotionally.
Girls Moving Forward now offers part-time
teaching jobs all over the bay area, and serves a diverse
group of girls ranging from first through twelfth grades.
Today, Elana and Lacy direct a rapidly-expanding organization:
meeting with parents, students, teachers, counselors, and
tutors to discuss gender, education, and how we can work together
to improve girls’ self-esteem.
